As well as creating databases, the job role will also involve maintaining, retrieving, updating and processing data. The job role may also require you to transcript paper records to computer files. In terms of qualifications needed, many companies will only require you to have a GCSE in Maths and English. Whilst having an IT qualification would be an advantage it isn’t a requirement, as opposed to having a good understanding of the subject.

In terms of pay, the average hourly rate for a data entry job is £8 to £9. Additional benefits such as bonuses and holiday pay may also be offered. When it comes to careers the biggest deciding factor is often the annual pay you may get. An experienced data entry clerk working full time may have an annual pay of £16,000. Whilst this isn’t the highest paying career field, this may be perfect for anyone coming back into working full time from a long break from working. It will definitely suit someone entering the job world for the first time.

Whilst data entry jobs may have been harder to find before, with so many companies globally having to have their staff work remotely. There has been an influx of data entry jobs now being advertised across the job market. Which means you don’t have to look hard at all to find a job within the field. You can also go down the less traditional route and work as a freelance data clerk. To do this, you can create a profile on freelance work websites such as Fiverr, Upwork or People Per Hour. This is great if you want to work in data entry as a side hustle but not your full time job.
